Suddenly it seems summer is gone, I've had my last swim (I think but may be tempted if we get some another hot day), the Quince are starting to drop - jelly making time and the Autumn Crocuses are popping up in random places in the garden. We have had some great rains so the ground is green & quite soggy in parts which is unusual for Central Otago as we are usually sun bleached and parched at this time of year. Its the best time to plant deciduous trees as it gives their roots a chance to establish before they start growing again next spring, also autumn is the time of year when growth is drawing down (ideal for root growth). Some of our favourite trees for Autumn colour include: Acer rubrum (Canadian Maple) cultivars
Euonymus alatus (Spindleberry)
Ulmus Frontier
Fraxinus Raywoodii (Claret Ash)
Cotinus (Smoke Bush)
Cornus (Dogwood family)
Parotia Persica (Persian Ironwood)
Prunus (Flowering Cherries)
Let us know what your favourite is.....
In the garden: we have planted spinach seed which came up very quickly (used the moon calendar)
Zucchinis seem to be very slow this season as do the beans which is not a bad thing as they tend to go into overdrive very easily. Jamie is picking pears today so we will be busy bottling & drying them. I'm going to have a go at making Quince wine could be interesting I will keep you posted.
